Want to find out what Brazilian jiu-jitsu is all about? We want to meet you and make sure you’re a good fit for Ronin BJJ, too. In the dojo, you’ll form some of the closest bonds you have with anyone in your life. In fact, you’ll soon be annoying the people currently in your life by talking about jiu-jitsu all the time and surprising them with Japanese words like “ashi garami” and “sumi geishi.” Mat space is limited, and we’re looking for new members who will respect their instructors and training partners, help those less experienced along on their journeys, and explore the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu together (and have a strong willingness to get choked in the process).
What to wear
At Ronin BJJ, we train in both gi and no gi. The gi, or kimono, is the traditional uniform of Japanese ju-jutsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It allows for sturdier grips and a wider variety of chokes. We’ve got one you can borrow. For no-gi classes, a rash guard, shorts, and spats are preferred, but a well-fitting t-shirt and shorts will work for trial classes.
How to prepare
At Ronin BJJ, you’ll meet police officers, teachers, students, office workers, and farmers—people who have somewhere to be the morning after class. We try to stay healthy and keep each other safe (while trying to choke the heck out of each other). Hygiene is important—wear clean clothes, and if you can, take a shower and brush your teeth before class. Help keep blood off the mats by trimming your fingernails and toenails.
