Our Women-only Self-Defense and BJJ classes provide a safe and welcoming environment in which to learn the fundamentals of self defense and BJJ. Women’s-only students also have access to all the Adult BJJ classes where we’ll be sure to match you with partners who will keep you safe on the mats while helping you develop your skills

During the British women’s suffrage movement, increasingly violent exchanges with hecklers in their audiences and eventually the police caused British suffragettes to take up the Japanese art of jujutsu (the precursor to Brazilian jiu-jitsu) as an effective means of self-defense. Edith Garrud who measured only 4’11”, became the first British female teacher of jujutsu and one of the first female martial arts instructors in the West, opening her own London dojo. A student of Sadakazu Uyenishi, Garrud trained the Bodyguard unit of the Women's Social and Political Union in jujutsu techniques to protect their leaders from arrest and from violence from members of the public
